Mayo Appointment: At the appointment I met with two oncologists. - TopicsExpress

Mayo Appointment: At the appointment I met with two oncologists. A senior oncologist and one that works underneath him, Dr. Larsen. They were very positive with all of us and said that we have options. This made me feel good. They suggested that we need to think outside of the box for my situation. As we all know my situation is not typical for someone who is 30 years old. They discussed focusing on two things: hormonal therapy and removing the cancer spots. They discussed talking with a surgeon about removing the lymph nodes in the chest. This was something they wanted to make sure was a safe thing. Otherwise radiating the lymph nodes would be an option. Finally, a discussion of ablating the small spot on the liver would be another option. As far as the hormone therapy, my cancer was fed by estrogen. They would like to eliminate as much of that from my body as possible. Their thought was to suppress my ovaries and put me on a new medication eliminating estrogen. I was on tamoxifen to do this but that did not work. Their thought was to hold off on chemo and leave that as a just in case. Before making a final decision these two oncologists will be speaking with their team of breast cancer oncologists on Tuesday. They will come up with their final plan and let me know on Tuesday. Today I found out Dr. Kumar from Fairview Southdale has some of the same views as far as a plan goes. He would like to see me start chemo first and then do the Mayo plan as above. We will wait until Tuesday to see what the Mayo officially decides and which plan will be best for me.
