Mayor Finch: Stay Safe, Stay Home BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (January 26, 2015) – With a massive winter storm bearing down on Connecticut’s largest city, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch urged people to stay inside and off the roads tonight, starting immediately. This announcement comes on the heels of Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy issuing a statewide travel ban as of 9:00PM tonight. “With our city in the midst of a snow emergency, it’s critical that Bridgeport kids and families are safe and secure. The best way to do that is by staying home. We need everybody hunkered down. We need the roads clear so the plow crews can work. The latest forecasts indicate this could be an historic blizzard, and safety is our top priority. Here’s our mantra: Stay safe and stay home, said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. The latest forecast for Bridgeport, Conn. projects 25 to 27 inches of snow, and sustained winds of 15-to-30 miles per hour. Flood prone areas could see minor to moderate flooding at high tide Tuesday, most likely at approximately 4:30AM. “We are expecting blizzard-like conditions and white-out conditions. We can’t emphasize enough to stay off the roads. Stay at home,” said Scott Appleby, Bridgeport’s Director of Emergency Operations. Mayor Finch noted that public works crews will have approximately 70 pieces of equipment at their disposal – including 21 pay loaders and an array for tri-axles trucks – to clear city streets and assist with snow removal. He also reiterated that with the snow emergency in place, there is no parking on snow emergency routes and alternate-side-of-the-street parking on secondary roads. “Stay on the even side of the road until further notice because we want to make sure we plow the entire city before we have residents shift. It truly is a partnership between us and our citizens to make sure we have an efficient operation. If we’re able to come down your street and get to the curb, it’s going to be a lot faster to get to the entire city,” said Jorge Garcia, Bridgeport’s Director of Public Facilities. Snow Emergency streets are marked with white signs with red lettering. Be prepared Key resources for residents to use during the storm include: During the storm, residents with non-emergency, weather-related questions or concerns should call the City’s BConnected Call Center at 203.576.1311 or the Emergency Operations Center at 203.579.3829. Residents can use the Bridgeport’s BConnected request system online at bridgeportct.gov/bconnected, or the BConnected mobile app that’s available on iPhone or Android smartphones, to report any snow-related concerns. Items to be included in an emergency preparedness kit: One gallon of bottled water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for you and your pet A three-day supply of prescription medication Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both Flashlight and extra batteries First aid kit A whistle to signal for help Moist towelettes Plastic trash bags and ties for personal sanitation Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities Manual can opener Local maps Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger Extra fuel (stored in a safe container) for the power generator Preparedness tips: In the event emergency travel is necessary, fill up your car with gas, check oil and windshield fluid levels Sign up for emergency alerts at ctalert.gov. Garbage and Recycling Pickup: Due to the expected weather conditions, garbage and recycling pickup scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, are canceled. Tentatively, pickup will be delayed by one day weather permitting. City Offices Closed to the Public on Tuesday, January 27: City Hall, Margaret E. Morton Government Center and the Health Department will be closed to the public on Tuesday January 27. Only employees essential to storm cleanup are to report to work. Parking: Additional off-street parking will be available at school parking lots. Parking is also available at: Surface parking lots across the street from the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, the North End Library, 3455 Madison Ave., Veterans Memorial Park (entrance off Madison Avenue), Municipal Parking Lot located on the corner of Fairfield Avenue and Jetland Street (adjacent to 2895 Fairfield Ave.), Health Department at 752 East Main St., and the lot adjacent to the former Waltersville School, 95 Gilmore St.
