Mayor Haddock and the City Council recognized the following groups at the Council meeting this past Tuesday. Congratulations to the players, coaches, and parents! Florence All-Stars 8U Boys Cal Ripken Baseball A.R.P.A. STATE CHAMPIONS 2014! Players: Ben Bretherick, Carter Daniel, Jason Dobbs II, Miles Edwards, Ryland Hale, Griffin Hanson, Jackson Irby, Aidan Kennedy, Luke Mosley, Nathan Nester, Isaiah Shaw, Damian Thompson. Coaches: Head Coach Jody Hanson, Assts. Jason Dobbs, Derrick Mosley, Bert Bretherick, and Ken Irby. Florence All-Stars 8U Girls Softball A.R.P.A. STATE CHAMPIONS 2014! Players: Kamora Simpson, Laila King, Madie Sain, Caroline Lambert , Emma Moore, Olivia Stegall, Emma Kate Wright, Mara Bowerman, Chloe Gargis, Natalie Nix, Lucy Kate McCoy, Jazmyn Pearson, MaLyric Scott. Coaches: Head Coach Dustin Wright, Assts. Brent McCoy, Terry Stegall , and Rico Scott. Florence All-Stars 10U Girls Softball A.R.P.A. STATE CHAMPIONS 2014! Players: Makenzie Edwards, Liviah Lash, Lindsey Price, Amira Maddox, Dixie Broadfoot, Kate Powell, Makayla Carter, Bayley Langley, Rylee Quick, Hailey Martin, Elizabeth Jennings. Coaches: Head Coach Bret Jennings, Assts. Ashley Jennings, Bobby Langley and Dennis Price. Florence Swim Team A.R.P.A. STATE CHAMPIONS 2014! Megan Rhoads - the 2014 State Champion and Gold Medal winner in the 100-yard Individual Medley. She also won 6 gold medals at the Alabama State Games this year. Madie Sain-the 2014 Silver Medal winner in the A.R.P.A. 25-yard Free Style. These athletes represented the Shoals area at the 2014 National Special Olympics USA Games in Princeton, Pennsylvania in June. Benjamin Butler Moore - won two gold and one silver medal in swimming at the Nationals. Ben has participated in Special Olympics since he was 6 years old. He is now 43 and has won 45 medals with these last three National medals being his most special. Shirley Griffin - won three medals in Bowling at the Nationals - Shirley joined the Special Olympics bowling team in September 2012 and loves it. Stephen Jason Smith - won three medals in swimming at the Nationals. Jason has won six State Olympic medals in bowling and 10 in swimming in his lifetime. He also participated in the National Special Olympics in 2010 and won three medals. Julie Jackson - won the bronze medal in breast stroke swimming at the 2014 Nationals. She has participated in Special Olympics for 22 years and during that time, she has earned, gold, silver, and bronze medals in swimming the butterfly, relay, and freestyle.
