McEldowney Cup Outing – Slieve Russell Golf Club Saturday 7th September 30 intrepid golfers (!?) set sail to Co. Cavan on Saturday past to play the away leg of the McEldowney Cup at the splendidly appointed Slieve Russell Golf Club. On a day that saw incessant rain good scores proved hard to come by. Nevertheless Rodney Moody held his nerve to claim the Overall 1st prize. Heading over the border with 42pts firmly tucked away in his back pocket Rodney managed 30 pts to claim the trophy with an overall score of 72pts. In fact only one man was able to match his handicap on the day with Gabriel Bradley claiming 1st place on the day with a very good score of 36pts. This saw Gabriel claim a 6pt victory with 2nd place Matt Roxborough coming home with 30pts, which was enough to push Paul Kearney in to 3rd spot on countback. The F9 prize went to RA Quinn with 19pts, and only the wrong type of rain and a thumb injury on the back 9 prevented him from winning the overall prize!! Uel Watt picked up the back nine prize with 16pts. The gross prize winner (and probably the only man without a “ding” on the card) was Russell Rees. Despite the weather everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day. No more so than Joe McCloskey and Brian Dowds who in the bar afterwards regaled all comers with their heroic deeds in winning the nearest the pin and longest drive respectively!! Unfortunately these prizes were part of the Kildare Golf Club society!! Joe and Brian will be sent on a Geography refresher course in the off season!!
