Meade School District preschool inservice, which heralds the beginning of the new school year, will be held for all staff Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 20-22. The first day begins at the Sturgis Community Center with refreshments and exhibits prior to the 8 a.m. kickoff. Opening ceremonies include the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem followed by greetings from Superintendent Don Kirkegaard and Meade School Board President Bob Burns. The 24 new teachers, 1 counselor and 1 speech therapist will be introduced after which the superintendent will address the staff. The remainder of the first day consists of iPad training for the fourth grade teachers, and meetings at each school for the other staff members. Activities for Wednesday will be held at Sturgis Elementary School and Sturgis Williams Middle School and will feature training for K-12 instructors of mathematics from the two textbook companies (Pearson for K-5 and College Preparatory Math for 6-12). This training will focus on meeting content standards with the new teaching materials. Staff who do not teach math will work on course planners, which highlight what materials are used and how the content standards are being met. These course planners give teachers, students and parents a road map of what is being taught during a year-long timeframe. For the final day of inservice, Thursday, Aug. 22, all staff will be in their classrooms planning for the school year and preparing for that day’s open houses.
