Mean Willie Green here I didnt watch the CMAs, but vicariously got a peek via a few Twang-town friends various posts. I know making music and art it isnt a contest, as such, and one artists art is as personal and important as any others. I also recognize commercial art is more concerned with consumption and moving units than it is about moving minds and expressing passion (although neither is mutually exclusive - see The Beatles, for instance). However, it is on one hand a crime that someone as passionate and artful as Sturgill Simpson is ignored by awards like CMA, but on the other hand a relief that he can make such passionate and moving music without having to answer to music row. Sturgill Simpsons show at The Thirsty Hippo is sold out next week, and I commend Hattiesburg for recognizing something great (even if you only bought a ticket because someone else said you should). He didnt set out to save country music, and would probably bristle at the thought. But the guy is the real deal - I am fortunate to have purchased a ticket a few days after they went on sale.
