Meat Allergies and Tick Bites nbcnews/health/allergies/bad-bite-tick-can-trigger-meat-allergy-doctors-say-n175521 I came upon this cutting edge research about 6 years ago just after it was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The research comes from Dr. Platts-Mills and one of his bright fellows at that time Dr. Commins. We had a patient (you know who you are) who hunted deer meat with her husband and ate venison 9 months out of the year, only to find that when they supplemented with beef meat off season in the summer, she would have hives about three hours after eating beef. She had been bitten by ticks quite a bit with the hunting they did. Bizarrely enough her skin test was exuberant to both milk and beef but she ate dairy products with no issues. The culprit is a cross-reactive protein allergists call alpha-gal which can now be detected by an IgE blood test to alpha-gal. Other meats have been implicated as well. I will write more about food cross-reactivities and this weird world of food allergies we live in...keep posted!
