The GenerationQ programme develops Fellows to drive forward and influence improvements across health care services and organisations with practical skills and insights that are needed more than ever in today’s NHS given the funding squeeze and emphasis on quality. Cathie Cowan said: “I am thrilled to having gone through a very rigorous assessment process to be selected to participate in this prestigious leadership and quality improvement programme. The opportunity to study at Ashridge, one of the worlds premier business schools and leadership development providers, and go on to Masters with a tremendous cohort of people and use my learning to improve care and services is an exceptional opportunity. “ Chair of NHS Orkney John Ross Scott, who sponsored Cathie, said: Over the past five years as Chief Executive, Cathie has elevated NHS Orkney to a new level. Her leadership has been vital in the boards improved performance and in our drive to modernise and upgrade services. “To maintain focused and effective leadership, fine tuning and refreshing is essential, so ongoing training is vital. Her success in becoming the only Scot to qualify for high profile GenerationQ training is evidence of the high regard people have for Cathie in the NHS and the training she receives should also prove highly beneficial to the on-going success of NHS Orkney.” Dr Jennifer Dixon, Chief Executive of the Health Foundation said “We have found 18 gifted people to participate in the Fellowship, and are very excited to see what they will achieve. GenerationQ equips those wanting to improve frontline care with a wide range of tools for quality improvement. These skills are needed now more than ever because of the challenge on tax funded health care to transform at pace over the next few years” Previous fellow Dr Ian Bullock, Chief Operating Officer, National Clinical Guideline Centre, Royal College of Physicians said “The experience of GenerationQ has been a rich stream of learning underpinning my leadership and quality improvement commitment, and how I have applied this ‘in action’ in my role at the Royal College of Physicians.” GenerationQ provides an innovative learning experience, including residential leadership forums, the support of individual executive coaching, action learning in facilitated peer groups, the opportunity to engage with systems beyond health and extensive feedback. The fellowship is an 18 month part-time postgraduate programme.
