Media Release From: Denise M. Moloney Community/Media Relations Manager, 352-797-3609 Re: Technology Assists with Identification and Arrest of Burglary Suspect Date: November 18, 2014 On 11-15-14 just after 11 a.m., David Brown walked out of his residence on Marysville Street in Spring Hill to find an unknown male burglarizing his pick-up truck. Upon being confronted by Brown, the male suspect fled on foot, but not before stealing a knife from the truck. Brown called the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. Dispatchers obtained an accurate description of the suspect from Brown and passed the information along to responding deputies. While en-route to the call, Deputy Chris Croft spotted the suspect running across Mariner Boulevard towards Maderia Street. Deputies in the area parked their vehicles and began checking yards for the suspect. Not long after parking his motorcycle, Deputy Chris Croft spotted the suspect again. Deputy Croft, who was in his Sheriff’s Office uniform and had other deputies with him by this time, identified himself and advised the suspect to stop. The suspect immediately turned away and fled from the deputies again. After a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was caught be Deputy Croft and Deputy Joseph Savelli at the intersection of Maderia Street and Canfield Drive. When asked for his name, the suspect provided a name of James Hine and a date of birth (DOB) of 02-09-1973. Upon searching the suspect, deputies located two wallets, neither of which contained any form of identification. Deputies utilized in-car, law enforcement programs to query the name and DOB provided. The information did not match the suspect. Sergeant William Hillman responded to the scene with additional in-car technology, referred to as Rapid ID. A fingerprint sample from the suspect was entered into the Rapid ID system on scene. The suspect was immediately identified as Henry Taylor, W/M DOB/01-10-1985. While Deputies Croft and Savelli were in the process of positively identifying the suspect, Deputy Matt Spooner picked up the complainant, David Brown, and drove him to the scene. Brown was able to identify Taylor as the person that burglarized his truck, prompting the original call to law enforcement. Henry Taylor was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center. He was charged as follows: • Armed Burglary Conveyance • Resist/Obstruct Officer w/o Violence • Providing False Name to Law Enforcement o Bond - $17,000. Sheriff Al Nienhuis said, “If this same scenario played out even a few short years ago, it would have taken hours or days to positively identify the suspect. Even worse, it was not uncommon a decade or two ago for criminals who used an assumed identity to bail out before their true identities were determined. Today’s technology makes it harder and harder for criminals to lie to law enforcement and allows us to hold these thieves accountable.” It should be noted that a witness who lives nearby also observed the incident taking place, to include the initial confrontation between Brown and the suspect. The witness overheard Brown confronting the suspect regarding the burglary and advising the suspect that he was calling law enforcement. When the witness saw the suspect run away, the witness immediately began following him on a motorcycle and provided deputies with valuable information when they arrived on scene.
