Media Release Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Scott Mascher – Sheriff 255 E. Gurley Street, Prescott, AZ 86301 Dwight D’Evelyn - Media Coordinator 928-777-7441 August 6, 2013 YCSO Explorers Answer the Call *** This past weekend, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Explorers provided critical assistance in two unrelated incidents. The Sheriff’s Office is very proud of these young men who reacted professionally in each situation. On August 3, 2013, around 5 PM, YCSO Explorers Garrett Russell and Kevin Simpson were returning from official duties when they came across a young man injured and lying in the street on Whipple Place, Prescott. Apparently the victim had been riding his bicycle and after colliding with a curb, struck his head during the subsequent fall. One of the Explorers began first aid by immobilizing the victim’s head and spine while his partner directed traffic and cleared an area for arriving emergency responders. They also flagged down a deputy to assist securing the area. The 13-year-old teen was eventually transported to Yavapai Regional Medical Center for treatment and later released having sustained no serious injury. The deputy commented that these Explorers acted without hesitation or instruction and both were a critical asset to the victim’s well-being while on scene. The same day at approximately 6PM, YCSO Explorer Gilbert Hernandez was returning to Prescott Valley via 89a through Jerome. Gilbert came across a rescue operation involving an elderly couple stranded in their vehicle after sliding down a steep embankment. He contacted Jerome Fire personnel on scene and offered his assistance. Gilbert was asked to handle pedestrian and vehicle traffic control while fire personnel set a rope rescue. During the rescue, an electric winch became disabled and personnel at the top of hill were told to pull ropes by hand and hoist victims to the roadway. Gilbert, along with several fire department members, successfully pulled both victims to safety for treatment by paramedics. Sheriff Mascher greatly appreciates the actions of these fine young men in service to others. YCSO Explorer Coordinator Bill Russell is extremely proud of the way Explorers acted under demanding circumstances. Russell notes that the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has continually supported the Explorer program for those youth willing to make a commitment to the Sheriff’s Office and the public we serve, while “exploring” opportunities a law enforcement career offers.
