Media is said to be the fourth pillar of a democratic form of Govt. Media derives this importance from the colossal role it plays in political development of a country. It was media that elevated countries like Germany Russia Korea Japan and many more to their present heights. In third world Media is looked upon as the saver of democracy because these countries are at a much heigher risk of falling pray to military dictators. Media owes an enormous part in pragmatising Pakistans dream in the form of the historic democratic transition that took place last year. This achievement give our media some teeth. The challenge now was to strengthen democracy and make it people oriented. This was possible and could have been achieved had our media not gone into a state of superiority complex. Instead of empowering the people, Pakistans two leading channels i.e. ARY NEWS and GEO NEWS have entered a tug of war. Each of the two has become a puppet of either one or other political party. The controversy created by these channels reflects from the opinion of their fans making them hostile enemies of one another. The country is already politically segregated into sindi and punjabi by PPP and PML-N respectively, through last electiöns and this inter-channel rivalry can exacerbate the situation. It is high time for PEMRA to intervene and bring the two channels to justice.
