Media release I have received a number of requests from Papua - TopicsExpress

Media release I have received a number of requests from Papua New Guinea over a period of almost 30 years: • from 1985 to 1990, to help train local lawyers, • in 1990, to serve as a judge, based in Rabaul, • in 1991, to chair a Leadership Tribunal, • in 1992, to chair a Commission of Inquiry, • in 2008, to assist in the Office of the Solicitor General, and • in 2009, to serve as a judge, based in Wabag. As I responded to each of those requests, it should come as no surprise to the people of Papua New Guinea that I have responded to a recent request from the NEC to chair an Interim Office Against Corruption (IOAC). I am familiar with the work that was done by Investigation Task Force Sweep (ITFS) and I want to see that the matters commenced by ITFS continue. For that reason, I will be meeting with Sam Koim as soon as possible with the aim of making the handover of those matters from ITFS to IOAC as smooth as possible. I am also keen to ensure that the fight against corruption is continued by the IOAC until such time as an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is established. In the current climate, I accept there are all manner of suspicions and all manner of allegations. Consistent with the independence I have brought to each of my previous roles in this country, I have not communicated with any politician (including the Prime Minister) in relation to the IOFC. Over the next few months I will be doing three things: (1) continuing the matters commenced by Task Force Sweep, (2) receiving any new allegations of corruption, and (3) making recommendations to assist the proposed ICAC I am glad to have the opportunity to once again serve the people of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. Issued by Graham Ellis SC, Chairman of the Interim Office Against Corruption
