Medical Tip of the Day: Sometimes catchy phrases are worth noting because it forces us to remember them. Peel appeal or skin appeal has always been a nebulous subject but for most of us , the data is in. The peel or skin many times has good things in them that we dont find in the fruit or vegetable itself. Three good examples are an apple, potato, and pomegranate. The apple skin is loaded with phloridzin which is a strong antioxidant that you will not find in the apple itself. This alone has been linked to the improvement of diabetes and the prevention of cancer. The potato skin has far more fiber, iron, potassium and B vitamins than the fleshy part along with more fiber but avoid the skin if it has a greenish tinge. The pomegranate offers us benefit from not only the fleshy part, but the seeds and flower both which is why I recommend taking its supplement which has all 3. The skin here I would avoid. The point is that with each fruit or vegetables, you need to look at its total benefit. Lastly, when eating the peels or skins, wash them thoroughly with a vegetable brush and water (soap not necessary), to remove dirt, bacteria and any residual pesticides. The wax we see on some vegetables like eggplant, cucumbers, apples and tomatoes is harmless and does not have to be removed. Monday, macular degeneration and what you should know. Have a great weekend.
