Meditation: The Keys to Success When you start out meditating, it can sometimes be a challenge to know what to do. But don’t fret! We’re here to help :) 1. Start Small at First with 5-15 Minutes (or less) It can be incredibly difficult to start a regular practice so give yourself some slack and start off slow. Its not a race, its a lifestyle change. 2. Commit Even though you may be starting off with small bursts of meditation, keep it regular. For instance, meditate when you wake up and when you go to bed. Or if those times don’t work, before lunch or some other time that works better for you. This way, your practice becomes a habit :) 3. Good Posture and a Straight Spine It’s easy to think you need to sit cross legged just like monks; but it’s really not necessary. Sitting on a chair or just finding a comfortable position is all that’s necessary…the real key to a solid meditation is creating and maintaining an erect posture. An easy way to maintain a good posture is to imagine a string attached to the top of your head pulling you upward. This will create length in the spine, which in turn allows you to breath deeply and stay attentive. 4. Techniques There are a wide variety of mantras or types of meditations you can employ; many of them are based on personal preference. But for starting out your meditation practice, it’s best to look for something that is simple. Chanting “om” (an ancient and sacred mantra) or just watching the breath are great ways to clear the mind and connect within. As time goes by, you may want to explore deeper and more profound techniques similar to those recounted in The Autobiography of a Yogi. 5. Do it Your Way There are thousands of gurus and teachers out there who all have the secret technique to relaxation and peace, just like there are thousands of weight-loss diet plans out there. Find something you like and get comfortable with it, and don’t worry too much if you don’t have the latest most popular mantra or meditation beads, as long as you are feeling more relaxed and in tune you’re doing an amazing job. 6. Don’t Worry About your Thoughts The brain is made to think, so don’t feel stressed when it does what it was made to do. When you get stressed about the quantity or quality of your thoughts, you are not relaxing and letting your mind just chill out. Just imagine your thoughts as little birds: you can’t stop them from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from nesting in your hair. 7. Meditation Spot It can be very beneficial to have a “spot” that you meditate, one that you only use for that purpose. Whether it be a certain chair, inside a walk-in closet, or the backseat of your car. It’s a great habit to regularly use the same location for your meditation time. Our bodies and brains are hardwired for routine…so just like when you lay down on your bed you will feel the need to sleep, when you sit down in your spot you will feel peaceful. So there you have it! 7 tricks to getting your meditation off the ground (literally). What are your tricks to meditation. Facebook
