Mediterranean Diet Slows Aging Process. The Mediterranean diet consists of eating fruits, vegetables, fish, lean meats, nuts, and olive oil. This diet is associated with several health benefits, and now a new study suggests it may help slow the aging process. Researchers studied the diets of nearly 5,000 middle-aged women and found that those whose diets most closely resembled the Mediterranean diet were significantly more likely to have longer telomeres than those whose diets least resembled the Mediterranean diet. Telomeres are structures at the ends of chromosomes that protect genetic information from degrading during cell division. They become shorter over a persons lifetime and are considered a marker for biological aging. Short telomere length has been linked to many age-related diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. - BMJ, December 2014
