Meet Penley and Nieve, the newest additions to Folsom Womens Facilitys rehabilitative programs. The 12-week-old Labs arrived Thursday to meet their new inmate handlers, who will train them in basic obedience and socialization for 12 months. At that time, the puppies will head to professional training with Canine Companions for Independence to become assistance dogs for people with disabilities. In addition to learning to care for and train the dogs, the handlers will be learning about responsibility and communication, while at the same time giving back to the community. “I love that these puppies will become service dogs one day,” said inmate handler Tamara Allen. “I’m proud to be able to help someone who is in need of something.
