Meet Puzzle and Cookie. Puzzle was my best canine friend who passed away in August 2013 at the age of 14. Cookie came to live us in November 2013. Both dogs were racing greyhounds early in their lives. Many people dont realize it, but retired racing greyhounds make wonderful and easy pets. They are usually very mellow, and prefer to spend their time sleeping on the couch. They love to please their owners, and can be very sensitive when scolded. Most retired greyhounds have never seen many of the things you and I take for granted. It takes a little time for them to get used to things like stairs, mirrors, and not putting their paws up on the counters, but they usually learn fast and integrate well into the household. In my experience, greyhounds are not the smartest of breeds, but what they lack in brainpower, they more than make up for in heart. I love this breed because they are so sweet and so loving. If you are interested in adopting a retired racing greyhound, there are rescue groups nearby that you can contact. Check out Fast Friends in Swanzey NH at helpinggreyhounds.org/, or Greyhound Rescue of New England in Mendon, MA at greyhoundrescuene.org. These groups take greyhounds that are ready to retire from the track (usually around ages 3-5 or so) and match them to people based on personality and owner preferences.
