Meet our new lady, who we have named Fern (unless we find a family that is looking for her). This sweet soul was seen wandering through the Village of Kitscoty, until today when she was found curled up in someones doghouse for some shelter from the cold. She was very thin, matted, covered in straw (even though the doghouse she inhabited did not have straw in it) and appeared to have a leg injury. After contacting the Lloydminster & District SPCA to make sure she had been properly written up and could be posted to their online Lost Pets list, we traveled with Nadine from the SPCA to Weir Veterinary Services where we were able to go in for an emergency examination. She was immediately administered pain meds when it was clear she was uncomfortable, and taken in for X-Rays by the staff. Fern is believed to be around 6-8 years of age, about half her recommended body weight, and had to have immediate surgery to put a dislocated hip back into place. She is recovering at Weirs overnight, and will be on strict bedrest once strong enough to go to a foster home. Unfortunately our veterinarian said that the hip was difficult to put back, which means it is likely that it may dislocate again. If this happens, our options will be to either have the leg amputated or have surgery done in Saskatoon or Edmonton. Due to her poor weight, IF another surgery is needed we will have to put her on pain meds and wait until she is strong enough for another surgery. She was very afraid today, but as you see in the picture on the stretcher I think she was also thankful to be somewhere warm. I truly hope that it will be all good things coming her way from here. We hope that a family somewhere is worried about her and searching for her, but if not we will do the best we can.
