In 1996 he was awarded the Warrior Silver Medal, the Honolulu Police Departments second highest award for Bravery and Valor. In 1998 he was awarded the Warrior Gold Medal, the highest award for Bravery and Valor and in 1999 was voted Officer of the Year. On three separate occasions, he was a member of the Unit of the Quarter. His most proud accomplishments to-date, though: married 24 years to wife Tracy and blessed with three daughters - Tiare, Tiani, and Tiana. Motivated by a four-year contract that netted an aggregate 3% salary increase to base, he successfully ran for office, and in January 2002, assumed the office of President for the State of Hawai`i Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO), and is now serving his fourth consecutive term. T, as everyone knows him, remains ever passionate in bringing together and representing the best interests of the 3,000-member union to improve safety, better working conditions, benefits, and better pay for police officers across the State. As an elected Negotiator and Spokesperson, he led SHOPOS negotiating team and successfully negotiated three consecutive contracts, two four-year contracts, and one six-year contract, that have netted cumulatively a 113% increase to base, a notable highlight while serving as a Union official. T worked a number of years with the select Criminal Intelligence Unit, Waikiki Crime Reduction, Criminal Investigation Gang Detail, and Homicide Detail. In December 2007, Ma`afala was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the Narcotics/Vice Airport Division; however, when asked if he would consider a special assignment to Peer Support, he readily accepted - it has always been his desire to lend a hand and support to his brothers and sisters in blue and their families. His interests include church activities, all kinds of sports, golf in particular, and playing a wide range of music from Hawaiian, R & B, and contemporary. He works tirelessly with many local charities in supporting the disadvantaged community through fundraising events and conducting sports events and counseling for troubled teens. Ma`afala believes that by teaching our youngsters to make the right choices and redirecting them from a life of crime that Hawai`i will truly be a great place to live, work, and play.
