Meeting God If we’re going to be effective in hearing God and successful in walking with God, we have to develop certain habits. Staying close to God requires that we develop the habit of spending quiet time with our Father, Lord and King. Developing that habit is critical to our growth in Christ. How to Develop a Daily Quiet Time: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Ps. 46:10). If we are going to be effective in hearing God, we have to do certain things over and over again. That is something called our daily devotions. Out of that, God will speak to you. Out of that, God shows up! Make it a Habit: One of the most important things we need is to take our times of hearing God and make it a habit. Successful people develop habits that unsuccessful people are unwilling to commit to. What did Jesus do about this matter? “And he came out and proceeded as was his custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him” (Luke 22:39). The Lord made it a habit to spend time with the Father. You can celebrate God in a crowd, but you can only know God one-on-one. You need to develop a habit of coming to Him one-on-one. You need to decide when is the best time for you to just spend time with God in reading the Bible and journaling what He is saying to you through the Bible. God is speaking to you through the Bible. Write down what He is saying to you. He’ll highlight different things, different passages. When is the best time for you to meet with God? The best time is: When You are at Your Best: If your best is in the evening, then meet with Him in the evening. If your best time is in the morning, you meet with Him in the morning. God deserves the best part of our day, not the leftovers when I’m tired and I say, “Oh, I have to read. I got to reach chapter … oh, this is so boring.” Reading the Bible is not boring. It is because I’m so tired that it seems boring. God deserves the best part of our day, and not only the best of our day; He deserve our best every day. Do It Daily: “Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway” (Prov. 8:34). God expects us to come to Him daily. If we need to hear God just about every day and we need to hear God daily for the things we are doing, then we need to come to Him daily. Let me tell you why this is so important. We all have a tendency to drift. Things don’t fall apart overnight; they start to drift long ago. God wants us to stay near to Him, in His presence. If we read the Bible, earnestly pray and do devotions and journal what He is saying to us only when we have a need, then we start to drift away from Him because we are not doing our devotions regularly. We are not hearing God. Then things start falling apart and the pain gets so great that we say, “Oh God, we need You!” And we read the Bible and God starts giving us counsel. Now we make a correction, but it is a radical correction. Before the correction is made, you have to go through this valley of pain and then it settles down. Now, watch the contrast. When we start to drift, if we meet with Him daily, corrections are made daily. We drift a little bit and He talks to us about our attitude and perspective the next morning and we’re corrected. Do you see what happens? The corrections are made in smaller increments and pretty soon, basically, we just stay right here; we don’t have to go through all that pain. That is why God says, “If you need correction daily, then come to Me daily.” Fruits of Daily Devotions: By drawing close to God, we get to know Him. Why does God want us to get to know Him more? Because the more you know Him: The More You Love Him: The more you know Him, the more you love Him. But your love will not increase if your knowing Him or knowledge of Him doesn’t increase. The more I love God, the more I become like the person He created me to be. How do we get back to the image that He has for us? Love God and get to know Him. The More You Experience Freedom: The Bible says the more you get to know Him, there is a freedom that comes into your life. What will set you free is not just the truth; what will set you free is the truth that you know. The More You Will Change: The more you know Him, the more you’ll change. God is saying the more I love Him and get to know Him, I won’t drift so far because I want to get to know Him. As you hear God every day, watch how His image in you begins to radiate
