Meeting Paul and working with Carol by Stacey Thompson. I met Paul Edic in 2003, shortly after I met my friend Carol. I was considering the possibility of being her live-in aide. I was going to take her to visit her quadriplegic son and bring him home for a few days at a time. I was a little apprehensive about driving her van for the first time, because I am not a fan of high profile vehicles. Paul is one of those souls who brought joy to the people who were blessed to know him. I watched Carol communicate with and take care of her son; although most of their communication took place spirit to spirit because he could not talk. He had a tracheal tube in his throat that had to be sucked out regularly. Paul died at the age of 24 in April 2004 shortly before I actually moved in with Carol. As her live-in aide: I was able to observe the process as she built up the Accessible Homes Foundation, obtained state and federal non-profit status, put together a board of directors, worked toward 50c3 status, and held fundraisers. We went to the homes out at the Daybreak Community; a housing community in South Jordan, Utah, sponsored by Kennecott Copper Corporation, now owned by Rio-Tinto. When they were open for people to see that is where the picture of Ted was taken with his wheelchair outside the house. All of the realtors had to come outside to him. About twenty other people came from United Cerebral Palsy and other organizations for people with disabilities came to see how many of the homes were accessible. The Accessible Homes Foundation is a worthy cause. All who participate in this cause will have the privilege of getting to know the valiant lady behind it all and hear stories about her son, who is was very much a part of shaping the person she is today.
