Mehbooba hopes Modi will keep promises on Kashmir ‘We will get clear mandate in assembly polls’ Anantnag, May 20: The opposition PDP president and South Kashmir’s newly elected MP, Mehbooba Mufti, Tuesday said she hopes India’s Prime Minister designate Narendra Modi will keeps his promises on Kashmir. “During his speech in Jammu, he (Modi) had vowed to carry forward the legacy of Vajpayee on Kashmir if voted to power. I hope he delivers what he has promised to us,” Mehbooba told reporters after addressing a victory rally in Dak Bungalow, here today. Praising former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajapyee for his initiatives on Kashmir, she expressed hope that Modi would take a leaf out of Vajpayee’s tenure and initiatives on Kashmir. “We hope that Modi not only starts dialogue process to resolve the Kashmir issue but also works for better ties with Pakistan,” said Mehbooba. PDP had won all three Lok Sabha seats in Kashmir by defeating NC candidates. Mehbooba, who reclaimed Anantnag-Pulwama seat from NC’s Mehboob Beg, was upbeat about upcoming Assembly elections and termed the parliamentary elections as an “indicator of what is to come”. “People have reposed their faith in us and we are hopeful that we will get a clear mandate in the Assembly elections so that we get a chance to serve people and fulfil whatever they expect from us,” she said. Referring to ruling National Conference, Mehbooba said no political party is doomed after losing an election. “We lost in 2008 and now NC has lost. Losing does not mean a party has been wiped out.” “It was unfortunate that the state machinery was used to meet goals of a political party. They exploited youth to enforce a boycott and now they are getting them arrested,” she said adding the way youth are being exploited is leading them astray and ruining their careers. She said one is well within his/her rights to boycott elections but it cannot be enforced. “A poll boycott enforced by beating elderly people, cutting fingernails and molesting young women is uncalled for,” added Mehbooba.
