Delegation pleads PM for inclusion Meitei in ST list The Peoples Chronicle July 11 2013: A five member delegation of the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur met the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on July 10 urged the latter for inclusion of Meitei amongst the list of the Scheduled Tribes of the Government of India. Lok Sabha MP Dr Meinya Singh and Laishram Subhash, a resident of Delhi also accompanied the delegation during the meeting with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who indicated his willingness to include Meiteis in the ST list. The STDCM delegation included Dr Y Mohendro Singh, N Ishwarchandra Singh, N Manikanta Singh, S Manglem Singh, E Baburam Singh. During the meeting with Prime Minister, delegation leader Dr Y Mohendro submitted a copy of the memorandum which the demand committee had submitted to Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat on November 30, 2012. The memorandum stated that the Manipuris were a cohesive society based on equality before the merger to India. However, after the merger of Manipur to the Indian Union, the cohesive Manipuri was split into Tribals and Non-Tribals and Scheduled Castes as per an order of the President of India in the year 1950. This split in the Manipuri society could be restored if the Meiteis are included in the list of the ST of India, the memorandum said and added that the Meitei had already been included in the Mandal Commission recommendation.
