Melancholy day. Dads house, the one he had constructed for their retirement years, closes today, and a new family will take possession of it. He lived there just under 19 years, as it was assembled in two pieces via crane in February of 1995. Grandma Abbott was there on that cold February day to watch the process and tour the house for the first time. She would pass away 17 months later. Mom and Dad would live in this house for only four years before mom was diagnosed with the disease that would later claim her life. They enjoyed just seven years there before things got real bad, but those were quite possibly the seven best years of their entire marriage, with grandchildren and happy memories. And there were a lot of wonderful memories indeed. I did not initially support the move from Camanche to Albany, but in hindsight, it proved to be the right move for them. Sold for a steal of a deal, this home represents far more than a mere place to live. Perhaps its sentimental value far exceeds its real value only in the minds of our family, but its the home where my parents enjoyed their final years on this Earth together. Its the home where they faced their greatest personal and emotional hurdles, providing inspiration and encouragement in spite of their trials. Its the home from which they left for their ETERNAL home with our Lord and Savior; they left within 50 months and 3 feet of each other. Hollywood could not script such an ending. And if I cannot take comfort in the parting of such a worldly thing as a building or a place, I can at least rely on my memories of them there, for they left a legacy that my generation can only aspire to.
