Melissa Savage says: Dear Cis People, today on the International Trans Day of Visibility, please check out this Tumblr and process how the permeating culture of rampant transphobia propagates through media. Look at how many shows you watch make jokes that berate and disparage trans people. So many people think its OK for a laugh while it contributes to our ridiculously high rates of murder and suicide. Even if it were nothing but jokes, its still tough being the object of ridicule across the large majority of human beings on the planet. But its more than that. It contributes to trans panic, the misrepresentation creates fear, and people act violently out of fear. It so often perpetuates that were inherently false people and again exposes us to violence. The incredibly high level of violence trans people face is directly related to societys de-humanizing attitude toward us. Please consider speaking up next time you hear a transmisogynistic joke. We really need all the help we can get. You can do so little and help to save my life one day.
