Members, my apologies for the delay in write up to last months meating, a busy couple of weeks. The August meating of the Beef and Burgundy Club was held at Navala Currascaria in the Riverside Quarter of Brisbane City. Navala had only opened recently and was building solid trade with local business men/women and lovers of beef all around Brisbane at the time the club visited. The restaurant made for a great night out, bringing the culinary history of Brazilian cowboy’s cooking meats over an open fire pit to the centre of Brisbane with fantastic views over the river, particularly from the outside dining area. Many of the of major meat dishes are slow cooked over a coal fire pit at the entrance to the restaurant with tender cuts being prepared on the specialty grill visible from the main dining area. Navala produced a good many memorable beef dishes from the ground pit including; rib on the bone, whole short ribs, whole brisket. From the grillA few members pushed constitutional boundaries and sampled the darkest of white meats, chicken hearts. One BBC founding member may even have veered off-course and ended up trying seafood! The wine on the night was an interesting Malbec from the Mendoza region of Argentina (the ‘Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec, 2011, Mendoza, Argentina’), which proved difficult for nearly all to place. Whilst a little on the young side it was certainly a different blend to that seen on menus in Brisbane. On the night, the top beef score was an impressive 4.5 from James Crouch, best in wine was Carl Blunck with 2.5. James Crouch and Philip Johnson tied for the top spot with 5.5 points out of possible 10 overall. Being just over half way through 2014, the year-to-date scores were shared with the group: • In lead position for Beef, with the highest average score to date being 3 out of possible 5 is James Crouch, with yours truly (Rod Ennis) lagging in last place having a dismal 0.67 out of 5 (formal challenge to the scoring will be submitted shortly). • Wine is led by Jason Carlson with 3.67 out of possible 5. There is a tighter spread across the group in wine with the lowest score belonging to Caitlin Pearlman with 1 out of possible 5. NB: members must have attended more than 1 meating to have an average score. Slick ( Clinton McIntyre) has taken up Beefmaster duties for next month’s meating on 4th August. Details out shortly. Overall, Navala scored well with the guests on the night with average scores being; - 9.5 / 10 for meat, - 9.1 / 10 for the wine, and - 9.6 / 10 for service.
