Members speaking out...Thanks Maret! Dear NDP friends: Here is a letter I just sent to the Oshawa This Week regarding the regressive increase in fees to the Ontario College of Trades for hairstylists. sincerely, Maret ________________________________________ From: maret_sadem To: rszekely@durhamregion Subject: Ontario College of Trades Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2013 20:33:40 -0400 Dear Reka: The Ontario College of Trades increase in membership fees for members in good standing is unfair in the extreme. Members of the Trades make vastly different salaries. For example, in Canada today, ironworkers make about $51125, plumbers $52,370, brick and stone masons $43,968, heavy equipment operators $46,684. Most of these trades, today, are still populated mostly by men. Barbers, on average in Canada make $34,543 whereas hairdressers, who are still mostly women, make, on average $21,258. A more fair approach, by the College, would be a proportional fee based on income. The disparity in salary for the work of women and men continues in the 21st century. Of the 18 member board of governors of the OCT, only 5 are women. The hairdresser representative on the board owns two salons in Yorkville and in the Rosseau Resort and Spa in a Marriott Hotel. For the young men and women today, who graduate from accredited hairdressing schools, this increase in fees from $60 every three years to $120 annually is not only a hardship, but in comparison to other members of the College of Trades is excessively harsh given their poverty line wages. Given that the goal of the College is to encourage more men and women to work in trades and give the industry a greater role in governance, certification and training, the Board of Governors should re-examine this new fee structure to make it more fair for women and for low wage earners in the trades in Ontario. Who will be the voice for equality for our local hairstylists if not their own College? Sincerely, Maret Sadem-Thompson (Oshawa) 289-240-9268
