Memorial Day. After the Civil War ended, the GAR, Grand Army of the Republic, established Decoration Day, as a dayto decorate the graves of soldiers who died in the war. General John Logan, of. carbondale IL, declared it shall be observed on May 30. After WWI it was established to honor deaths from any wars. In 1971 an act of Congress made it a national holiday, to be held the last Monday of May. In December 2000 Congress established the National Moment of Remembrance, to be at 3 pm on Memorial Day. This information is by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. So, this Monday, take a moment to pause at 3 pm and reflect how many soldiers have died in the service of our country. Lets honor them with a prayer for those they left behind.
