Memorial Day weekends as a kid were often spent at large family - TopicsExpress

Memorial Day weekends as a kid were often spent at large family reunions at my Aunt Millie & Uncle Calvins place in Rockville, MD. The small little house seemed to be splitting at the seams with people. Both with large extended families, I often couldnt remember who was a relative or just family friends. What stands out is hearing my Dad, my grandfather Pap, his brothers Calvin & Louie, and the other senior statesmen of our family reflect on their military service. Or, my grandmother Nana speak of the brother she lost to WWII & my mother recount stories of my grandfather Boppa in Pearl Harbor at the time of the attacks. To discuss the military service history in our family was not an everyday occurrence. As a child, I may have been unaware of the significance of this gathering of the greatest generation reliving our nations history thru personal experience. Today we honor your bravery & give thanks for your safe return to us. We honor the memory of your brothers & sisters who gave all to protect these ideals of our great union. God Bless you all & God Bless the United States of America
