Memories of Christmas Past... A big day at the Petersons in - TopicsExpress

Memories of Christmas Past... A big day at the Petersons in Colorado was the delivery of the Christmas Box from Gram and Gramp who lived in Oregon. In the box were Oregon Filberts (Hazelnuts), not a big deal for their Oregon and California grandchildren... but for the Colorado grandchildren the nuts were a big deal. Fast forward to 2014 when Filberts are shelled they sell for $12.99 a pound... so still a treat. There were rings of homemade German Sausage ,made by a friend of Gram and Gremap. Homemade Sauerkraut was carefully packed in the box to be cooked with the sausage. There was a jar of Boysenberry jam ( otherwise known as Poisonberry ) from Hanks ( a grocery store in Hillsboro) The filberts were doled out, the Poisenberry Jam was a special treat on toast into January. The German Sausage and Sauerkraut along with Mashed Potatoes were served for Christmas Eve Supper. Then the time came when the Petersons no longer received this package from Gram and Gramp and our Christmas Eve supper was no longer German Sausage, Sauerkraut and Mashed Potatoes. I now buy some Filberts in December and a small jar of Poisonberry Jam that carries me into January.
