Memories of a bygone year Wow I was just thinking about years ago - TopicsExpress

Memories of a bygone year Wow I was just thinking about years ago when we were in our teens with not a titter of wit in our locker, a trait that I have retained to this day. But we were unique and wanted to show the world this even if it was just our world at the hop in the grounds of the Redemptorist Church. So we decided to go to Dublin and found a store which sold ex-British Army/RAF jackets and some of them had holes in them from what I can only assume were gunshot wounds. However, they were purchased in Alpha Bargains Store in Capel Street Dublin and we transported them back to Dundalk via train. We then proceeded to paint them up in Boo Watters mother’s front room, with the names of our favourite Rock Group at this glorious time of innocence. Some of these were Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath, sure the more radical the better because they were different and we vowed to be different but in our own way. Then Friday night came and we were almost set but our Doc Martins, Levi Jeans, Cheesecloth Shirts, and of course our new Ex-Army Jackets were just not enough to tell our world that we were different so we decided to back comb our rather long hair and daub glitter on our cute faces in honour of Mark Boland lead singer with T-Rex. Then and only then were we set to take on our world of Dundalk, Seatown, The Happy Valley, New Street, Mary St North, and of course The Redemptorist Hop. We three amigos Ghan, Boo, and Domo, like the famed Musketeers, marched unashamedly down Seatown Place and into our Music Mecca for two hours of bliss. We certainly caused a very noticeable stir with the clientele who gawked in amazement at our attire but most of all at our unique presence that attracted all comers for we didnt know it at the time but we were being creative, setting a trend that was copied by our peers and a much wider circle. I don’t know if our girlfriends Jacqueline, Joanna, and Sheila, at that time were happy or just plain ashamed to be with us as they never said but just went along with the façade because they knew more than most what made us tick in this vortex of puberty when our hormones were dashing about like erratic electrons around an unstable atom. These were glorious time for me when I was learning about life, love, and friendship the most important things to ever possess in our struggles through this fantastic journey of time and space. I have learned that true friendship last forever even if time and a necessary distance separate for we must all complete our own unique journeys, perhaps a franchise we bought into before we came here. Yes, it never erodes because even in that smidgen of time when we frolicked about like elaborate chandeliers in the Redemptorist Hop remains with me as do my friends Ghan and Boo for when we meet and talk we continue on as if it were yesterday. I could not ask for a better life with friends like these who were there with me and for me in all my adolescence adventures that made me who I am. Dominic McKevitt
