Mens BAL Report The Clubs Senior Men started the season in style by winning the first British Athletics League National Division 2 fixture at Down Grange. The conditions were challenging with frequent downpours and at one stage the Pole Vault was suspended but this did stop the clubs athletes as Sam Sleap won the A string with a 4.20 m vault and Ben Hazell the B clearing 3.80 m. After a very competitive match Basingstoke won with 345 points, 13 more than close rivals Southampton who had 332, then came Kingston & Poly 275, Bristol & West 271, Harrow 257, Derby 241, Notts 230 and Southend 229. It was the Showler-Davis brothers who excelled, with Dean winning Deanthe A 100 and 200 m in 10.85 and 22.25 while Kieran did the same in the B string events, his winning times being 10.90 and 22.72 both had to run against strong winds. Another win on the track came from Tony Higbee in the B 110 m Hurdles in a time of 15.27 while in the final race of the afternoon the 4 x 400 m team scored a convincing Kwin in a time of 3.21.85. Led off by 15 year old Owen Richardson the other 3 runners, Hayden Carter, Mark Berridge and Matthew Lavoipierre consolidated and came home to win by a clear 3 seconds. On the field there were several wins apart from the Pole Vault and numerous second and third placings as the team led throughout the afternoon, pick of these being Sam Adams new PB of 7.33 m in the Long Jump for 2nd in the A string. Adam Akehurst picked up two B string wins with 6.67 m in the Long Jump and 51.73 in the Javelin. Isaac Cox also scored good points with 3rd in the B High Jump clearing 1.75 as did Rob Kite in the B Discus throwing 35.27 and Stuart Parker in the Triple Jump going out to 13.28. So a good start has set the Team up for a strong challenge for promotion with the next match at Southampton on June 7th. Report by Ian Byett
