Mental Health Spotlight: Bipolar Disorder Bipolar Disorder, also known as Manic Depression, is often categorized as a "brain disorder" that is known to result in unusual shifts in mood, activity level, energy and the ability to carry out seemingly "routine" tasks. The symptoms that commonly occur with Bipolar Disorder are severe and can sometimes be difficult to effectively treat. Those who suffer from Bipolar Disorder exhibit change from extreme highs to extreme lows that can result in damaged relationships, poor job performance, poor school performance and ultimately, even suicide. The exact cause behind Bipolar Disorder is still unknown, but it is commonly believed by scientists that genetics and brain structure do play some role in the development of this disorder. When taking statistics into consideration, it can be observed that AT LEAST half of the known Bipolar Disorder cases started before the age of twenty - five, with many of the first symptoms occurring during childhood and early adolescence. Bipolar Disorder can not really be "cured", but it is possible for it to be treated effectively long - term. There are many different medications available to assist those who suffer from Bipolar Disorder. The vast majority of therapists and psychiatrists have highly recommend using medication in conjunction with psychotherapy, believing that these two treatments are MOST EFFECTIVE when used together.
