Mention Gunnera and chances are the plants that come to mind are the two giant rhubarb-like South America perennials: Gunnera tinctoria and Gunnera manicata. So often seen planted around pond margins. However, many Gunnera species are quite diminutive. Two of the New Zealand natives, Gunnera monoica and Gunnera prorepens, are spreading evergreen groundcovers that are quite at home in a moist rockery. They spread by underground rhizomes or runners but are not too difficult to keep in check. Their flowers are inconspicuous but the bright red or orange-red berry-like fruits that follow can be showy. botanicalstockphotos/photo-gunnera-monoica-23526.htm
