Merry Christmas, darling friends! While the elves are busy putting finishing touches on the decorations, and before I get started on throwing together a couple of pies, I thought Id give you another installment of the Chicken Chronicles. Last week, Katie, the Welsummer rooster, went to meet his maker, humanely, and in a way that honored his life. And my son said he was delicious. Since that time the two shyest chickens, a Cuckoo Maran and a Buckeye, have been like different birds: visiting with chickens and humans, elbowing in for their fair share of treats, and rather than being bullied and chased around the pen, they are finally holding their own. The shyest of all, Rue the Cuckoo, center of third photo, has been assuming a submissive posture when I approach her, and yesterday when I introduced oyster shells into the coop, she was the first to dive right in. Im thinking that pretty soon Im going to have some chocolate-colored eggs...
