Merry Christmas, friends! I have a little gift for you – and your accepting it would be an even greater gift to me… Before you read the way-lengthier-than-normal status update to follow, I’m gonna go ahead and frontload the calls to action, should you choose to indeed act (and if you dont, I still love you): 1) Download my ebook – FREE through Sunday: bit.ly/OldComicGames 2) Review said costs-you-nothing-unless-you-wait-till-Monday ebook: bit.ly/wrong1review 3) Facebook share and/or retweet if you use Twitter (tweet coming soon): twitter/cbake76 Now, the story behind such blatant self-promotion… As I’ve been looking for new work over the past few months (and getting married), I’ve also been putting together some fun content that started as a series of blog entries about old-school superhero video games. At least that was the first intention – soon enough, the whole thing snowballed into, “Hey… Why don’t I just try out self-publishing an ebook on Amazon?” So…that’s what I’ve done. The result: “WRONG! Retro Games, You Messed Up Our Comic Book Heroes!” As my holiday gift to you all, the ebook is FREE through Sunday via the #1 link above. (It’s Kindle exclusive, so you’ll need the Kindle app for the smartdevice of your choosing if said smartdevice does not itself happen to be a Kindle. And if that’s iOS, you’ll have to use to web to purchase it since Amazon doesn’t allow for in-app purchases on its rival’s device.) The whole experience combines my three gaming-industry career paths into one project: It’s very much in the style I would have written a magazine feature for the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, with a dash of the “brand assurance” elements I executed while at Marvel – and here I am, PR’ing it like I would have when I was at LucasArts. Could the ebook itself represent the beginning of new fourth career path as well, this time as a self-publishing author? Your downloading “WRONG!” and leaving a great review (link #2 above) could steer me in that direction! In a nutshell, the ebook takes you through a tour of superhero video games from their beginnings in 1978 through 1992 – everything from Superman and Spider-Man to Kool-Aid Man and Howard the Duck. If you had an Atari, a Nintendo, a Sega Genesis, or anything from around then, you very well may have played some of these nearly 80 games – though I’ve tried to make the nostalgia secondary to the actual entertainment value derived from the short, easily digestible write-ups for each game. (I could tell you more, but there’s sales text and a full introduction for that...) Finally, a HUGE shoutout to Marvel cover artist Matthew Waite (matthewwaite.tumblr/), who created the pixel art on the cover for me totally at the last minute and totally as a favor. I can’t thank him enough. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it…and happy holidays to you all!
