Merseyside Police - Con Graham Turnbull (West Derby Dedicated Officer) gave this advice for residents to be aware!!! Recently there has been an increase in the number of burglary incidents within the West Derby L12 area, many of which have involved garden sheds being broken into and access being gained via the rear of the property. Many burglaries are carried out by the opportunist criminal who will be on the look-out for an open window or insecure door. By following the below advice you will help to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary. · Never leave your car or house keys on show by your front door, as this is an open invitation for the ‘hook and cane’ burglar to remove them via your letterbox. · Always lock your front and back doors (even when you are in the house) and if you have an upvc door ensure you lift the handle and turn the key. · During this hot weather get into the habit of closing down stairs windows when you leave the room, or if fitted put them on the night vent setting. · Ensure that garage doors are locked properly. · Fit a stout padlock to garden sheds and remove any gardening tools to a more secure location such as the garage or house. Rear kitchen or patio doors are often forced open using garden spades that have first been removed from the shed, which is often not even locked. · When you go out double check that all your doors and windows are properly locked including porch doors. If you go out during the evening then leave at least one light on. · If you have a burglar alarm fitted then make sure you use it. · If you go away on holiday tell trusted neighbours and ask them to keep a look out and offer to do the same for them. · Consider getting outside automatic lights fitted to the front and rear of your house, a strong padlock to any side gates and if possible try not to leave your wheelie bins where they could be used to assist people to climb over your fence. Some of the above advice might seem to be inconvenient, especially to those of you who lead busy lives however, by adopting such behaviour as part of your daily routine you can help to reduce the opportunities for burglary being committed. Please be reassured that Merseyside Police Officers from Eaton Road are actively patrolling your neighbourhood and are constantly working to reduce crime. Should you ever see anything suspicious then do not hesitate to contact Merseyside Police on ‘101’ and should you have any information regarding burglaries or any other crime then you can contact crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
