Merseyside businessman faces the threat of extradition to Africa – four years after his arrest over an alleged $2.2bn rainforest fraud A Merseyside businessman faces the threat of extradition to Africa – four years after his arrest over an alleged $2.2bn rainforest fraud. Mike Foster, 53, is accused of paying officials in Liberia £1.7m to secure a multi-billion pound rainforest contract enabling his company to sell virtual carbon credits on the global market. His company, Carbon Harvesting Corporation (CHC), was poised to agree a lucrative contract to obtain 400,000 hectares of virgin rainforest to take advantage of the carbon trading market, where firms and individuals can compensate for their carbon output by offsetting it against a green source. Mr Foster, 56, from Southport, has always vehemently denied the allegations, which he claims are politically-motivated. He believes his scheme would have enabled companies to offset their emissions at a far lower cost than the £16-per-tonne “carbon tax” imposed by the government. Mr Foster was arrested in June 2010 at his home on suspicion of corruption by City of London Police. Four years on, he has had his bail cancelled – but told he faces rearrest at any time and possible extradition to stand trial in Liberia.
