Message for Graduate Students: Update on Masters Pay - TopicsExpress

Message for Graduate Students: Update on Masters Pay Policy---- At the State Board of Education Meeting last week (September 5th) the SBE voted to direct the Financial Business Services Section to change the payroll deadline from April 1, 2014 to May 7, 2014. What this means for you: As the policy is currently defined, students must complete their graduate program and be employed in a public school prior to May 7, 2014. The April 7 deadline is a payroll policy, not a Licensure Section policy. The May 7th deadline is prior NC State’s Spring Commencement (May 9th), however an additional validation option was developed. Since our commencement occurs after the deadline, my office is required to submit an additional letter stipulating that the student is on track to receive their advanced degree and recommendations during the Spring Commencement. Therefore, it is imperative that all students who are graduating Spring 2014 and are applying for a license upgrade attend one of the licensure sessions with Ms. Fitzgerald. This will help us ensure accurate processing of your license. Additionally, the policy, as it is written, remains in effect in that only graduates who complete their program by Spring 2014 AND are employed in a North Carolina Public School will receive advanced pay. Students who complete their program during Summer Session I or II do not qualify. We strongly encourage those who can finish by December to plan to do so. Additionally, I would also encourage you to contact members of the State Board of Education (bit.ly/16xdncP) to let them know what your graduate program has meant to you as an educator and why they should support additional pay for graduate degrees. I would also encourage you to contact your representatives in the General Assembly (bit.ly/15R4Cxu) calling on them to repeal this policy. I will send additional updates as information becomes available regarding both the policy and steps the College of Education will take to assist you in processing your license upgrade. -- Michael J. Maher, PhD Assistant Dean for Professional Education and Accreditation
