Message from Development Watch Thank you to everyone for your support and efforts so far. We believe Council would have agreed to commence the process of changing the planning scheme had there not been the huge public and media interest at the council Special Meeting (Proposed Planning Scheme Amendments) on 30th Sept. So well done, but we have a long way to go! The Council has said that any changes to the planning scheme will be subject to community consultation, but it will be much harder to change the minds of Councillors, once they have put the amendments into the public arena for comment. We want to stop it in its tracks before it gets to that stage. No doubt you have seen the images presented by Sekisui via the media recently. Please note that these images ARE NOT TO SCALE. To allege there has been scaremongering is an understatement. The proposal is far worse than we expected. Furthermore these are just concept plans, subject to change , be prepared for increased density once the height limits have been lifted by any amendments to the planning scheme. SO our number one priority now is to convince ALL Councillors (before the next meeting in December) to vote AGAINST amendments to the newly signed off planning scheme. We need a majority of 7 councillors on our side. CHANGES TO THE PLANNING SCHEME WILL AFFECT EVERY CORNER OF THE SUNSHINE COAST. The Mayor proposes to change the Strategic Framework (which forms part of the planning scheme). The effect of these changes would be to allow highrise and intensive development right across the Sunshine Coast. The site at Yaroomba is just the first cab off the rank. Sekisui is proposing 10 storeys at Yaroomba (the same height as 12 storeys in Mooloolaba) but as stated by the developer, they are limited to that height only because of their proximity to the airport. The Mayor has talked about the Stockland block fronting the beach at Bokarina as another potential site. THAT MEANS ANY VACANT LAND OR LAND THAT BECOMES VACANT, COULD HAVE INTENSIVE DEVELOPMENT, AND HIGHRISE OF AN UNLIMITED LEVEL, BUILT ON IT. WHAT YOU CAN DO Please write to the Mayor and all Councillors. A sample of the letter content and all the Councillors email addresses follows on in this letter. Please also encourage other groups, friends and family on the Sunshine Coast to write a letter to their Councillor and copy in all the Councillors and Mayor. We need to bring on board the entire Sunshine Coast to lobby their councillor. Follow us on Facebook . Like/ Share/ Comment on Posts. ‘Spread the love’. Encourage your friends to follow us on Facebook, so we can spread the word on developments. Most Councillors hold sessions or clinics to meet with local people – usually advertised in the local paper. We need residents all over the coast to attend and raise the issues in the sample letter, and any other issues they may have with their local Councillor. Send letters to Sekisui House in Japan. Remember this company is’ extremely environmental’ and has been a leader in providing and designing innovative sustainable solutions. Even an off the shelf solar powered house in 1997! So they are more vulnerable because of this. SORRY GUYS - Great idea / solution however WRONG PLACE. No subtlety. Tell them theyre not wanted. The contact details for the CEO of Sekisui House are as follows: Mr Isami Wada [email protected] Let us know if you a theatrical type that could carry off a few media stunts.(If we can come up with something wild and weird enough it could go all over Australia). We are thinking a travelling white shoe brigade…contact [email protected] Finally, please attend the Information Session/s to be held by Sekisui on Saturday 18th October 10-2pm, and Friday 24th October 4-8pm, at Coolum Community Centre Park St Coolum Beach, to voice your concerns. Please remember any models or images will NOT BE TO SCALE. and the estimated heights may not take into account fill, rooftop air conditioners, pergolas etc. Sekisui will have their professional, sales spruikers on hand at the sessions promoting the development. Let them know we don’t want Sekisui determining our future, and influencing our council. Yaroomba is the wrong place for Highrise…it’s a desecration of Mt Coolum and a thumbs down to the local community and natural environment, and to our planning scheme. DONATE to our fighting fund at developmentwatch.org.au. Donations help us with advertising, printing, and the costs in running a campaign. Thank you for your support. We will be in touch regarding any further action. Yaroomba Campaign Development Watch Team PLEASE NOTE THE CIRCLE OF SOLIDARITY HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO TIMING ISSUES – IT MAY TAKE PLACE AT A LATER DATE TO BE ADVISED. LETTER TO MAYOR AND COUNCILLORS “I wish to make it clear that – 1. I do not want any major changes to the planning scheme that would allow more intensive high rise developments on the Sunshine Coast other than what the planning scheme currently allows; 2. I want Council to stop having secret meetings – I want to know what is being discussed and how councillors are voting? (The actual amount of “confidential” sessions is quite astounding) view: sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=cr-meetings 3. I want to know what amendments are being considered and how they might affect my division. 4. Ask why is the council supporting developers, against community wishes, and attempting to make amendments to the town plan without even a formal development application? “ COUNCILLOR CONTACT DETAILS Mail to all Councillors: Locked Bag 72, Sunshine Coast Mail Centre, QLD 4560 Mayor Cr Mark Jamieson Phone: Fax: Email: (07) 5441 8242 (07) 5475 7277 [email protected] and in the SUBJECT write “Attention Mayor Jamieson” Division 1 Cr Rick Baberowski Phone: Fax: Mobile: Email: (07) 5420 8987 (07) 5475 7277 0409 698 344 [email protected] Division 2 Cr Tim Dwyer Phone: Mobile: Fax: Email: (07) 5420 8965 0418 348 896 (07) 5475 7277 [email protected] Division 3 Cr Peter Cox Phone: Mobile: Fax: Email: (07) 5420 8978 0409 530 415 (07) 5475 7277 [email protected] Division 4 Cr Chris Thompson (Deputy Mayor) Phone: Mobile: Fax: Email: (07) 5475 9860 0447 712 443 (07) 5475 7277 [email protected] Division 5 Cr Jenny McKay Phone: Mobile: Fax: Email: (07) 5441 8043 0409 450 726 (07) 5475 7277 [email protected] Division 6 Cr Christian Dickson Phone: Mobile: Fax: Email: (07) 5441 8374 0400 720 103 (07) 5475 7277 [email protected] Division 7 Cr Ted Hungerford Phone: Mobile: Fax: Email: (07) 5441 8378 0408 746 761 (07) 5475 7277 [email protected] Division 8 Cr Jason OPray Phone: Mobile: Fax: Email: (07) 5475 9859 0417 574 638 (07) 5475 7277 [email protected] Division 9 Cr Steve Robinson Phone: Fax: Mobile: Email: (07) 5441 8086 (07) 5475 7277 0409 260 981 [email protected] Division 10 Cr Greg Rogerson Phone: Fax: Mobile: Email: (07) 5441 8368 (07) 5475 7277 0419 712 546 [email protected] Postal address All councillors Locked Bag 72 Sunshine Coast Mail Centre Qld 4560 SAMPLE LETTER Your address Xxxxxxxxxx Date Councillor xxxx Sunshine Coast Council PO Box Nambour Or by email Dear Councillor (your local) I/we/our family have been a resident of the Sunshine Coast for x years (or an investor or a regular visitor). What I love about the Coast is/ the reason we chose to live here/ why we visit regularly ( it’s laid back character, it’s family –friendly environment, the beautiful green spaces, the fantastic beaches, it is totally different from the Gold Coast, the peace and quiet, the village atmosphere......) Please do not vote to destroy what I/our family love about the Coast and what makes us different from the built up Gold Coast. I/ we do not want more highrise on the Coast than what the newly signed SC Planning Scheme already allows for. Please tell us what other amendments Councillors are considering so we can make sure they fit with what I/we/our family want and value about living/visiting (your area). Yours sincerely/regards Name & signature
