Message from John Robinson with the National Weather Svc.: I will run through the latest thoughts -- mine plus the forecasters -- on winter weather later this week. The wintry precipitation is still a long way off, so look for some changes in precipitation types and times before the precipitation eventually arrives. It is safe to say that some hazardous driving conditions are very likely to develop over a large part of the state. If we are very lucky, winter weather bulletins could end up being limited to some Winter Weather Advisories. However, I am afraid we are going to end up with some Winter Storm Watches, Winter Storm Warnings, and perhaps even some Ice Storm Warnings in the state before the weather gets finished with us. Much colder air should begin arriving in northwest Arkansas on Wednesday. The cold air will likely get hung up in the Ozarks for at least several hours, then spread to much of Arkansas Wednesday night and finally move through the southeast corner of the state on Thursday. On Thursday: Moisture will begin moving into the cold air that has overspread the state. Freezing rain and sleet will probably begin in the northwest part of the state, and should spread at least into north central sections Thursday afternoon. By dawn on Friday: Sleet and snow should be falling in the northwest part of the state and perhaps in north central sections. Freezing rain and sleet will probably reach the Oucahitas and the rest of north central and northeast Arkansas. Its possible that freezing rain and sleet could enter parts of central Arkansas, as well. During the day Friday: Precipitation will gradually diminish from northwest to southeast. Snow is likely to fall in northwest, north central, and northeast sections, and in the Ouachitas. Elsewhere, precipitation will probably change to freezing rain and sleet. The extreme southeast could be rain or freezing rain. All significant precipitation should end Friday evening. Another round of wintry precipitation is likely to affect much of the state from Saturday night into Sunday. Current indications are that this precipitation will be lighter. Precipitation could take the form of freezing rain or sleet across much of the state, except for the possibility of snow in parts of the north, and perhaps rain in the southeast. Again, I will emphasize that there are likely to be some changes in the forecast before the winter weather arrives, but it does look like there will be a good deal of hazardous travel. I will issue the next message around 11 AM Tuesday. John Robinson Warning Coordination Meteorologist National Weather Service, Little Rock Office
