Message from Radical Independence D&G :- Hi, Im sure it wont surprise any of you to discover that our two local MPs, Russell Brown and David Mundell, both voted in favour of the bombing of Iraq. I urge you all to put as much pressure on them as possible to show them the level of opposition to this action. I have sent the following email to Russell Brown, if any of you want to copy the structure and send it to him, David Mundell (although obviously youd have to remove the stuff about standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Tories!) or your own local MP if youre not from this area, please go ahead. I will also submit something similar to the local papers. Dear Mr. Brown, I was disappointed to learn that you have voted in favour of military strikes in Iraq. While I find the methods and ideology of ISIS to be distasteful, I feel that recent history has shown that Western intervention will only exacerbate the situation. It is clear that the divisions that have been created in the region are in large part down to the previous disastrous invasion of Iraq. The previous campaign in Iraq also resulted in over half a million deaths, millions fleeing the country and a devastation of the countrys infrastructure. There is also the question of the expense of such a questionable intervention, during a time when the coalition is pursuing an agenda of severe public spending cuts. It is estimated that Britain spent between £500 million and £1 billion bombing Libya in 2011. Just one Tomahawk cruise missile costs £850,000, enough to pay the annual salaries of 28 NHS nurses. I ask you to reconsider standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Tories on this, as they enact policy after policy punishing ordinary people for a financial crisis they were not responsible for, while simultaneously spending hundreds of millions of pounds on further destabilising the Middle East and creating further hatred of the West. Yours sincerely, Daniel Foley In addition to the email and submission to the local press, I will also look into attending their surgeries to put them on the spot about their support for the bombing. If any of you have any suggestions for further action we can take locally to oppose the bombing, please get in touch. All the best, Dan
