Message from the Secretary All of us at the Department of Veterans Affairs are saddened by the incomprehensible violence that occurred in our El Paso health care facility. We deeply mourn the loss of Dr. Fjordbak, and offer our deepest condolences to his family. No words are adequate at such a time, but I simply want the Fjordbak family to know that our thoughts and prayers are with them. Why such a good person’s full and loving life—a physician who chose to serve Veterans—was so suddenly taken is beyond understanding. The safety and care of our Veterans and VA employees continue to be our primary focus. We will continue to work tirelessly and cooperatively with the FBI, as well as the leaders and law enforcement authorities of Fort Bliss and El Paso, to determine the facts surrounding this tragedy. During this time, we should refrain from any speculation about what has taken place. We will rededicate our efforts and do everything possible to learn from this terrible misfortune and take every measure we can to prevent it from happening again. All VA facilities, whether they deliver care, benefits, or other important services, should always afford a safe, secure, and supportive environment for the Veterans we serve and for the VA employees who devote their time and energy to best serving them. That is non-negotiable. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all those touched by this heartbreaking event. Thank you all for your hard work, skill, and compassion as you care for the Veterans we are privileged to serve and for your continued devotion to our important, noble mission. God bless each of you and your families in the days ahead. Robert A. McDonald
