Message to the united states embassy in Kenya... We are in reference to a newspaper article appearing in the front page of Sunday Nation of 4th August 2013 in which it was reported that a US diplomat, Joshua Walde, was involved in an accident in which he is accused of being the culpable person and causing the death of one Haji Lukindo while at the same time injuring several others. While it is true that accidents happen, what has shocked us is what was reported that Mr Walde left the country almost immediately in what is perceived to be escape from justice. As you are aware, Kenya has its laws. We believe that diplomatic immunity does not include evading justice and causing the suffering of a family without caring about their fate. The US is believed by many to be a beacon of justice and respect for individuals’ rights. To imagine that the Embassy could be behind and/or support the evading of justice is in itself a travesty. MUHURI is calling on your Embassy to make public the reasons for Mr Walde’s sudden departure from the country right after the accident. We also call on your Embassy to inform us what you have done towards ensuring Mr Walde is held accountable for his role in the accident and what you have done to come to the aid of the late Haji Lukindo’s family and the others who were injured in the accident. We trust you will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and get back to us and the Kenyan people on the steps taken by the Embassy in this regard.
