Messiaens La Nativité is one of my favorite of all musical pieces ever written. Its nine meditations on the mystery of the nativity. You all know Im an atheist, but that does not mean that I dont believe in mysticism, esp. when people like Bach and Messiaen as so invested in their faith that they produce moving music. Over the next nine evenings, I hope to post the nine movements of Messiaens La Nativité. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Ive spent 30 years learning them. (And, no, it wont be me playing them, but real organists.) They are very satisfying pieces to learn, even it you dont believe. Messiaen was cerebral, like Mondrian. Also, you need to listen to all nine pieces to really understand what he has to say. He was one of the greatest 20th century composers, after all.
