Messy Madhouse...! The level of manipulation is astonishing in Pakistan. Information and even knowledge is not based on plane facts or stated in a simple way. No scientific or logical explanation of events, things, actions or reaction is given. Messages, statements and claims are exaggerated or distorted. Very often some are absolutely wrong. Truth and facts are lost in the fog of propaganda, spin and emotions. False claims, straight lies and conspiracy theories are common. From politicians to the media, from military to mullahs and even ordinary people---most of us are hiding behind masks. We can’t survive without wearing different kind of masks. In everyday life people lie or behave “diplomatically” because telling truth could be very dangerous, especially when it comes to faith or following religious rituals. Also there are some other taboo issues/topics/areas. Many Pakistanis, for example, consume liquor and in an unhealthy way but they don’t admit it. Similarly we keep our mothers, sisters, daughters and wives behind walls but stare at all other women. Our attitude towards religion and women is absolutely unhealthy. Hypocrisy is our way of life, we are so used to this abnormal behavior that if someone isnt like us we are shocked. It is true that being direct or open means putting your life in danger as Pakistan lacks freedom of expression and living by free will is difficult in this society but in the past three decades hypocrisy and dishonesty have become norms in our society--thanks to General Zia doctrine. In absence of critical thinking finding justifications and excuses for our wrongs and even crimes has become our habit. Instead of admitting failures and mistakes there is a tendency to shift responsibility. People like to complain but they arent ready to critically analyze their own behavior or role in the society. Leaving everything to God is the dominant trend. We want everything without working hard and making genuine efforts to achieve our goals. To most of us shortcut is the easiest way. A vast majority of people don’t care how their actions can affect others. Everybody seems to be pushing, pulling and some even cut throats to secure a place in the Paradise. Islam emphasizes on collective well-being and serving humanity but in our society winning a place in heavens has become a highly individual project for which people violate others’ rights and act against the spirit of Islam. In my opinion, we have turned into one of the most confused and messed up societies where dishonesty and hypocrisy prevail and ignorance roams. Yet, some of us claim that we are better than the rest of the world…! We are proud custodians of Islam without realizing that we are doing disservice to Islam by damaging its name, image and teachings. Sometimes I feel that our country is a messy madhouse without any psychiatric supervision. Shiraz Paracha
