Mesut Ozil was Arsenal’s record breaking headline signing of the summer but in a side that’s now packed full of midfield attacking options it might be that the return of Mathieu Flamini turns out just as important. The 29-year-old, signed for free after his contract at Milan ran out, broke up play at Sunderland and supplied the possession for the likes of Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey to do the damage. The Frenchman was a bit of an unsung hero in his last stint too – of the 37 games he started in the 2007-8 season before leaving for Italy the Gunners lost only twice. One of those was his final appearance, the 4-2 Champions League defeat at Liverpool, which was still 1-1 when he went off injured.
