Metals you may not be familiar with. Part 1 There are an impossible number of metal alloys out there. For most people who want to weld but aren’t daily welders, most will know only 4 or 5 basic ones. Even most career welders, box themselves into welding and specializing in just a couple of alloys. In fact, a welder with a good reputation may be at a complete loss if asked to weld a metal with a different composition than he is used to. This month, we will take a few of these blogs to talk about a few metals that you may have never heard of, or never thought about welding. A lot of people’s solution to weld or join these rarer classes of metal in years past was to braze them, when there was some doubt. Modern research and metallurgy have created processes which usually include some form of TIG or specialized MIG welding as a solution. Of course, you may not have access to these metals, or even have the equipment to weld these metals, but knowledge is power. We’re not going into a lot of detail as far as a deep scientific explanation of each metal, but will look at it from a layman’s standpoint and boil it down to the need to know specifics. The goal is to give a general overview of the metals so that you’ll have a basic understanding of each metal, its applications, and if applicable, a brief summary of weldability.
