Methane is the primary component of natural gas. It is an extremely powerful greenhouse gas that is much more dangerous, in the short run, than carbon pollution. Methane escapes into the air through many stages of natural gas development. And methane isnt the only problem with natural gas development. Families around the country are suffering from the noxious poisons that are part of the gas development process: we are being hit with dangerously high concentrations of volatile organic compounds, sulfur dioxide, benzene, formaldehyde, and other chemicals. The methods that will cut methane emissions will also help keep much of these poisons out of the air.
