Methinks there was a pivitol, watershed transitional bridge that crossed us from 1980s culture into the crux of *The Nineties*.. That indelible and remarkable moment, my fair listeners, was none other than the merging of Freddy Krueger and the Goo Goo Dolls.. The waning A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, a staple of 80s cinematic horror-comedy bombast was clearly in corroding decline come 1991, the year in which Freddys Dead: The Final Nightmare hit multiplexes, nothing less than an insult to the very celluloid on which it was printed.. The Final moniker being either an arch promotional hedging to garner added revenue, or an outward conceit that the series had indeed run out of steam.. Regardless of which, from the standpoint of the cultural zeigeist, Elm Street, along with the 80s, were ready to hand the wheel over to 90210, Nintendo 64, Nine Inch Nails, and Ninja Turtles.. But how were we to connect A to B?.. Disparate as the 80s and 90s may appear, there had to be some common denominator.. Enter: Goo Goo Dolls.. I had to double-check it myself, but it is indeed the band who wont tell no one your Name providing the serenade to keep us awake through the course of Freddys Dead.. Though it took the Goos till the mid-90s to break-on-through and reach the critical mass they dearly deserved, we can safely say they are indeed a significant *hallmark* of the 1990s--and not just because the lyrics to Iris were inadvertantly lifted from a friendship card.. It is also this authors thesis that the Goos acted as the Golden Gate in tele-transporting us into the highly *futuristic-2000s-decade*.. Little know fact, but Google took its name from the Goo Goo Dolls.. They settled out of court and for every search query we make, Google--on its way to planetary domination--inches closer toward its ultimate goal of controlling the tech matrix, setting loose a certain virtual boogeyman to haunt us from within the private sanctuary of our dreams..
